What is Parenting Wisely?
Parenting Wisely is delivered in a group setting through the use of DVD, a facilitator, and a workbook. The program addresses risk factors related to behavior problems among children and adolescents. Parenting Wisely normally last around 2.5-3 hours. This is a great option for families who are short on time, and we have a program available for parents of children and youth ages 3-18, and some versions are available in Spanish. The program has been particularly effective in reducing aggressive and disruptive behaviors.
How does it work?
The program includes a series of video clips that demonstrate common problems that parents of children and adolescents face. Through facilitator and group discussions, parents talk about different techniques that might work for their families.
Examples of topics discussion throughout the program include:
Children not completing chores properly
Children not obeying requests from their parents
Siblings fighting with each other
Parenting Wisely emphasizes the effects of family member interactions and encourages parents to develop a variety of skills, including:
Effective discipline strategies
Effective communication within the family
Monitoring the behavior of their child
Positive parenting strategies, such as reinforcing children's positive behavior, developing contracts with children to help guide behavior and developing appropriate consequences for negative behavior
Ability to facilitate positve social behavior
Ability to anticipate the development of new problems
Proper use of "I" statements and active listening when interacting with their children
