Bead for Life

002

The CTC Youth Leadership Group at Hutchinson High School sold Bead for Life at the school's annual Diversity Day.  The profits from this event go entirely back to the Bead for Life organization.  This organization purchases the beautiful beads from people living in Uganda, many of which were surviving on less than a dollar a day.  Bead for Life sells their goods through free trade markets throughout the world, and because of the organization many of the bead rollers are now able to have adquate food, shelter, and medical care.

For more information on this organization and to learn how you can host a bead party, visit, www.beadforlife.org

Annual Meeting Energizes Coalition

Annual MeetingMore than 60 coalition members and supporters gathered for the Communities That Care Annual Meeting.  The meeting, which doubled as a recognition for those who have worked tirelessly for CTC in 2009, was held at Marcella’s Continental in the Plaza Towers.

Coalition members, Strengthening Families facilitators, youth leadership group members, staff, supporters, and family members gathered to celebrate the success of the coalition through out the last year.

CTC Communities Director, Sondra Borth, addressed the group and shared some promising findings from the University of Washington study.

The study has been following USD 308 students in the class of 2011.

Results from that study indicates that students who live in a community where CTC is implemented are 23% less likely to consume alcohol in the last 30 days, 49% less likely to use tobacco products, and 37% less likely to binge drink.

Borth reminds the coalition that there is plenty of work left to be done and that we will need the help of everyone in the community to get there.

CTC’s newest initiative is a program called Communities Mobilizing for Change on Alcohol (CMCA), which focuses on reducing youth’s access to alcohol.

“If they can’t get alcohol, they can’t drink alcohol,” Borth said.

As a result of CMCA, a training was held on Feb. 16th on the Hutchinson Community College Campus.  This training showed retailers the proper way to check IDs when a costumer is buying tobacco or alcohol.

The training hosted more than 30 participants from convenience stores through out Reno County.
